“The Embassy of the U. S. is deeply concerned by the impact of the executive branch’s call to suspend and replace the judge and head of the judicial branch without the support of the legislative branch on the eve of national and state elections.
We note widespread Nigerian criticism that this call is unconstitutional which it undermines the independence of the judicial branch. That undercuts the declared determination of government, candidates, and political party leaders to make sure that the elections proceed in an exceedingly means that is free, fair, clear, and peaceful – resulting in a credible result.
We urge that the problems raised by this decision be resolved swiftly and peacefully following due process of law, full respect for the rule of law, and the spirit of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Such action is required desperately now to make sure that this decision doesn’t cast a pall over the electoral process.”
